    Tilak Ceremony


    An essential Pre Wedding Ceremony is called Tilak Ceremony. It is celebrated in almost all parts of the country. But the tempo and zeal are completely different. It is quite unknown as to the origin of this ceremony. But it is well known that the Tilak Ceremony has a deep significance and that it has integral relationship with the Vedas and ancient Puranas.

    Belonging to the auspicious Hindu customs, Tilak is a spot given on the forehead of the groom to indicate good luck and fortune. Wedding is of prior importance in a country like India and people are generally involved in merrymaking and entertainment during the Tilak Ceremony. People put in their best and adorn themselves with the magnificent jewelry items. There is a lot of merrymaking and entertainment.

    It is a well known fact that Tilak Ceremony unlike other Pre Wedding Ceremonies mainly concerns the groom. In this ceremony the groom is decked up with nice cloth and bejeweled with ornaments. Generally the female members do not take part in the function. It is entirely a male dominated zone. They

    The tilak represents divine presence. Tilak Ceremony is basically a happiness concerning male members. Commonly the groom's priest, father, benefactor, kinsman, comrade or even cousin puts the red tika consisting of vermillion paste. This is given in the forehead of the groom. Ritual chanting is always accompanied with this.

    Tilak Ceremony is the harbinger of new hopes and wishes. It indicates the commencement of new life. It is a sacred moment when a tika is given into the forehead of the groom. It is said that marriages are made in heaven only to be executed on this earth and truly enough, it is this marital bliss which needs the blessings of Almighty to make it happier.

    In some part of the country, Tilak ceremony is held in the residence itself while in others it is held in places of worship, like temples, and Gurudwaras. Wherever it is held, the main aim is the same. It is to bring in more wealth and fortune into the lives of the couple and provide them a lease of life, a conjugal bliss.

    Along with giving a drop of vermilion over the forehead of the groom, mantras are also chanted in order to invoke gods and goddesses to provide them wealth, health and happiness.

    After this ceremony there is generally an exchange of gifts. The bride's father extends his well wishes through gifts like sweets, fruits and clothes to the groom and also to other members of the family. The groom's father gives few things like sweets, coconut, sugar, mehendi, jewelry, clothes, rice and henna to the bride's family.

    Tilak Ceremony is also called the Chenky Ceremony. The hymns belong to the ancient Puranas and Vedas.
