Introduction
Located around 40 kms away from Madurai in the heart of the beautiful city of Sivaganga, the beautiful Sivaganga Palace is one of the greatest attractions of Madurai, while on a tour to Tamil Nadu. Though much of the palace lies in ruins today, yet, the majesty and grandeur of the Palace remain intact even today. Much of the attraction of the Sivaganga Palace stems from the several myths and legends which are associated with its rich history. Built around 1730, the palace soon became the seat of power of the Marava Kings, a lineage who were deeply influenced by both the Dravidian as well as Rajputana cultures.
The palace fell into ruins during the reign of Rajah Doraisingh Thevar (1898-1941), who transferred his lodgings from the Sivaganga Palace to the European Bungalow, which was located on the Madurai Road. Majestic even amidst its ruins, the architectural splendor of the palace retains its regal enigma even today.
