Introduction
The entire city of Chennai or Madras as she was formerly known is surrounded by a history that dates back to ages immemorial. A number of races and personalities have influenced this city for ages, an influence that is even today carefully preserved by the city which has amalgamated these into her culture. A number of monuments today remain scattered all the city, standing as mute witnesses to an era gone by. Notable among these is the Rippon Building Chennai, a relic of the city’s brush with Anglican culture.

Today, one of the most important tourist attractions of Chennai, the Rippon Building Chennai was named after Lord Rippon, while the foundation of the building was laid on December 12, 1909 by Sir Gilbert John Elliot Murray Kynyn Mound Bart and Carl of Minto, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India respectively.

Today the headquarters of the Corporation of Chennai, the Rippon Building Chennai is located to the west of the Central Station in Chennai. Pristine white, the architecture of the Rippon Building, Chennai is influenced by a number of architectural styles like the Gothic, Ionic and Corinthian. The expense that was incurred for the construction of the building was an enormously high sum of almost 7.30 lakhs Rupees. The building was designed by four of the most famous engineers of the age namely, C.L.T.Griffith (1909), J.E.Hensman (1910-1911), E.P.Richard (1912) and James R.Coats (1913).
