Introduction

Named after one of Hindu Trinity, Lord Vishnu, the city of Padmanabhapuram is made up by the words, “Padma - lotus, nabha - navel, Puram – Town, which literally means literally mean the “city where Lord Vishnu resides”. Located in the heart of this beautiful city is the ancient Padmanabhapuram Palace, Kanyakumari which was once the residence of the Perumal Dynasty who ruled Travancore from 1592 A.D. to 1609 A.D.

Mesmerizing all its visitors with its exquisite architecture and rich interiors, the Padmanabhapuram Palace Kanyakumari is perhaps one of the best examples of the richness of the traditional architectural styles of Kerala. Today, guided tours are available which provide the visitors with a deeper insight into the interiors of the palace which includes a tour of the private chambers of the palace. Almost all the 108 rooms of the Padmanabhapuram Palace Kanyakumari are decorated in styles which are essentially their own while reflecting a uniformity of pattern throughout the palace. Maintained by Kerala Archaeology Department, the palace is also home to a museum where a number of royal relics are preserved for public viewing.
