Introduction
Perhaps as a result of the once prominent influence of colonialism in Tamil Nadu, the state is home to a number of followers of the religion of Christianity, which provides, even today, an important influence in the official affairs and the governance of the state. Thus, it is hardly surprising that a number of churches are scattered all around the state of Tamil Nadu, forming not just important places of worship for the Christians of the state but also provide visitors to the state with some of the most important tourist attractions of Tamil Nadu. Many of the churches of Tamil Nadu date back to as the 15th century, a trait which proves itself in some of the most spectacular architecture that some of these churches exhibit. Some of the most important Churches of Tamil Nadu include:
St. Mary's Church
One of the first Anglican churches in India, St. Mary's Church was built during the era of the English possession of the Fort St. George, which history has proved to be one of the most important chapters in not just the history of Tamil Nadu but also of the history of India as a whole.
The Armenian Church
Built in 1772, on the site of the Armenian cemetery, this is one of the most revered churches in Chennai.
St. George's Cathedral
Built in 1815, this spectacularly decorated church has images which portray the capture of Srirangapatnam in 1799, one of the epoch-marking events in the history of Tamil Nadu.
