Chhatris are the tombs of the Great people that had managed to make a mark in this world. These Chhatris are usually the tombs of the Maratha warriors who have died in the Battlefields. But Chhatris at Shivpuri have been dedicated to the Scindia Family, one of the most reputed Royal Family in India.
History of the Chhatris:
Chhatris are the most powerful sites that induce a nostalgic mood to the heart. So, they are usually made elegant and tainted in gravel hues. The Scindia Family, being one of the richest families at Madhya Pradesh, has earned reputation by serving the country.
They were the Freedom Fighters during the British reign in India, and after independence they also gained the prestige of a noble family. Since then the members of the family were active affiliates of the Parliament too.
In Shivpuri, the graceful Chhatri have been erected by the Scindia Princess. In the garden, bedecked in a Mughal style with all the splendor and sparkle deeply associated with them.
Description of the Scindia Garden:
The alignment of the garden is such that the Chhatris face the water of the river and they are airy and not very close to each other. The main idea behind the construction of the Chhatris is that the people of the Great Family rest in peace (after their departure from the world) in front of the ever-flowing river.
Tourist from all over the world gathers here to note the mark of splendor associated with the place. The architecture is in harmony to the Mughal and Hindu style that were prevalent in India at that time.
In the lake one can discover the gorgeous Shikaras, type steeples, Rajput and Mughal Pavilions. Daily worship in these Cenotaphs indicate the respect and awe associated with the Scindia Family; beautifully decorated with flowers of all kinds, every day you can see the incense stick sending out fumes high above in each and every cenotaph; they impart the message that the members of the family want to communicate to their forefathers, or else thank them for enabling so much prestige to the family. This is much like the child’s prayer, “Father we thank thee for the light……”
