Lord Buddha is said to have takes seven births in order to attain the enlightenment and these seven lives of Lord Buddha is known as the Jatakas. The story of the Jatakas has been elegantly unscripted in the pillars or the Stupas of Sanchi.
These were the Archeological structures that have been erected in 35 BC, but the most distressing fact is that during renovation of these Stupas the gateways collapsed and there is not much to see now, since the original structure is no more.
The episodes of Lord Buddha’s various lives (Jatakas) and the achievements have been depicted in the Stupas. The presence of the Lord however had never been expressed directly; there were always symbols and artistic forms to emphasize his existence in various forms.
For example, the Lotus of the Temple, indicated his birth or the incarnation of the Holy Spirit in the earth to ensure the salvation of men, who are beyond all sin, or perhaps who say that “I am more sinned against than sinning”, much like King Lear.
Buddha came to rescue them. The Bodhi Tree represents the enlightenment of Lord Buddha. Enlightenment is the accession to the Age of Reason, or in other words it is the attainment of the Nirvana.
The wheel is the symbol of his teachings, which have been collected together by his disciples so that the Buddhist sacred text, Tripitaka. But the footprints deserve special mention because they indicate his presence, his power over his followers.
