Introduction
The city of Orchha is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The city is located on the banks of River Betwa in Madhya Pradesh, 16 kilometers away from Jhansi, and is encircled by fascinating hills and loads of greenery. The historical memorials of Orchha narrate the stories of war and peace, love and devastation and still retain the unspoiled charm. Bundela Rajput chieftain Rudra Pratap selected the land along the Betwa River as a perfect location for his capital and hence, Orchha was established in the 16th Century. In spite of being a derelict land, Orchha is still not forgotten. The stones of the beautiful monuments in Orchha are plastered on top and during the evenings the beauty of the city increases.
Sunder Mahal is a marvelous old palace in the town of Orchha. The palace though has lost its glory, stands out gloriously with its ruins and damages. Every portion of the palace reveals a rich story of the past.
History
Sunder Mahal was built by Prince Dhurbhajan, the son of Raja Jhujhar Singh, who ruled over the town of Orchha from the year 1627 to 1635. Prince Dhurbhajan fell desperately in love with a Muslim girl and also married her. He was so intensely in love with her and devoted to her, that he even converted himself to the Islam religion. Gradually he gave up even his grand ways of living and decided to spend the latter half of his life in meditation and prayer.
After his marriage to the Muslim girl, Prince Dhurbhajan retired to the Sunder Mahal and devoted himself wholly to mystic contemplation. After his death, Dhurbhajan came to be venerated as a saint. With the passage of time, his residence, Sunder Mahal, has become a place of worship for the local people.
