Introduction
The city of Orchha is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The city is located on the banks of River Betwa in Madhya Pradesh, 16 kilometers away from Jhansi, and is encircled by fascinating hills and loads of greenery. The historical memorials of Orchha narrate the stories of war and peace, love and devastation and still retain the unspoiled charm.
The Ram Raja Temple is probably the most important as well as unusual of all the temples in the city of Orchha. In Orchha, as well as the whole country, this is the only temple where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king and that also in a palace.
History:
According to the myths of Orchha, once King Madhukar Shah had a dream where Lord Rama appeared and ordered and directed him to construct a temple for him. Following the instructions of the God, the king brought his idol from Ayodhya, Rama's birthplace. But by that time the construction of the temple was not completed and the idol had to be kept in the palace till the completion of the temple. Afterwards, the king remembered that in his dream, Lord Rama had instructed him specifically not to remove his idol from the place where it has been kept initially. Hence, the construction of the temple was stopped and instead the palace where the God's idol was kept was transformed into a temple.
