Introduction
The city of Orchha is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The city is located on the banks of River Betwa in Madhya Pradesh, 16 kilometers away from Jhansi, and is encircled by fascinating hills and loads of greenery. The historical memorials of Orchha narrate the stories of war and peace, love and devastation and still retain the unspoiled charm.
The wonderful Laxminarayana Temple was built with dedication to Laxmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth. But, surprisingly, the temple does not have any idol or image of Laxmi. Instead, images of the two lovers, Lord Krishna and Radha, are placed in the shrine.
Description
The Laxminarayana Temple is rectangular in shape with four multi-faced projected bastions at its four corners. The temple is built with bricks and lime mortar and resembles a fort, with slots for cannons to fire at the enemy. The temple has 'jali' or lattice windows, which is pretty unusual in a Hindu temple. Below the parapets, decorated with animal patterns and flowers, are the vistas of life and times of Lord Krishna. The interior of the temple is decorated with wall paintings. The altar of the Laxminarayana Temple is built in the shape of a vulva or 'yoni'.
History
The Laxminarayana Temple was built in the year 1622 by Vir Singh Deo. Due to extensive damages, the temple was renovated elaborately by Prithvi Singh in 1793. Vir Singh built a seat or 'peeth' in the inner sanctum of the temple for offering sacrifices to Goddess Laxmi. Tantrik Cult manner of sacrifices is followed in this temple.
