Description:
The Chaturbhuj Temple was constructed between the years 1558 and 1573 by Raja Madhukar, and has ample light and space, which is pretty unusual for typical Hindu temples. The temple is as huge as any European cathedral and is a brave construction of its time. Chaturbhuj Temple has an enormous cross-shaped worshipper's hall, where the devotees of the Krishna-Bhakti cult gather. The chancel of the hugely spacious Chaturbhuj Temple is covered by conical spires.
History:
It is heard as well as believed that Raja Madhukar's wife, Maharani Ganesh Kunwar built a temple to place an idol of Lord Rama. The queen already had an idol of Rama established in her private apartments, Rani Niwas. When the Chaturbhuj Temple was complete, she decided to move the idol from her apartments to the temple. But according to the legends of Orchha, Lord Rama refused to move. The king immediately realized that his wife was bound by honor not to move the idol. So, in order to solve the problem, he installed the idol of Lord Vishnu - the Chaturbhuj God, and the place became the Chaturbhuj Temple. The king even placed a crown made of 100 pounds of pure gold, on top of the temple. But later, unfortunately, the crown got stolen by robbers.
