'Built like an European style palace, the Jas Vilas Palace has been converted into a museum in Gwalior. A part of the Jas Vilas palace is turned into a museum now, open daily except Mondays. The royal family still resides in the other part of the Palace.
History of Jas Vilas Palace
The Jai Vilas palace was built by Maharaja Jiyaji Rao Scindia. A British architect was commissioned to build the palace and design it. The reason was to impress the then Prince of Wales, who visited the place in the year 1875.
Description of Jas Vilas Palace
The Jas Vilas palace has an Italian structure combined with Tuscan and Corinthian architectural styles. The Jas Vilas Place is decorated beautifully with furniture from Varsailles, ornate mirrorworks, Venetian cut glass swings, Belgian Chandeliers, intricate hand made carpets, large ethnic dining table with tracks for the silver toy train that was used to carry food all over the table to different chairs.
How To Reach Jas Vilas Palace
The airport is 8 km from the main city, linked to all major cities via flights. The railway station is also conveniently located on the main Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai rail line. A good network of roadways connects Gwalior to all major cities of Madhya Pradesh. One needs to take an auto or the car till the museum entrance and not the palace entrance as they are far apart.
