Jama Masjid in Burhanpur is quite interesting structure and also has a interesting tale behind its construction. It is one of the magnificent structures made during Faruqui rule in this region. Originally in 1421 Azam Humayun got a mosque built in the north of city for his queen, now known as Bibi Ki Masjid. Later on population of town grew manifolds and it was difficult for all to approach this mosque built at a end of city. So in 1590, ruler Adil Shah built the present Jama Masjid in the centre of the town, so that everyone living in Burhanpur can easily access it. The construction of the Jama Masjid was started in 1590 and completed 5 years later.
Jama Masjid in Burhanpur is huge structure and it can accommodate around 500 people at a time. It has intricate and quite fascinating interiors. It constructed on the lines of Jama Masjid in Delhi. It has gateway towards east and its 12 feet high doors are from times of jahangir. Then in 1898, Begum of Bhopal, built another gateway ahead of original one, 24-feet high with delicate carvings. You can see two big minarets that rise majestically across the Burhanpur skyline. Near main door, there are 22 huzras (Meditation seats), then there are few mazzars of earlier priests at mosques. Towards the south of these mazaars are two huge hauzs.
Jama Masjid in Burhanpur is the example of intricate Islamic architecture. Numbers of arches enhance the beauty of the mosque and interiors are made of sparkling white marble.
Towards the south of these mazaars are two huge hauzs (literally, artificial water pools; these are used by devout Muslims to perform the ritual washing of the hands and feet before prayers). The water to these hauzs used to be supplied by underground passages from the Lalbagh (see below, Lalbagh). Nowadays, of course, the tap does the trick.
