Introduction
Supposed to have been constructed 2000 years ago, the Bandhavgarh Fort is often mentioned in the Puranas and the other legendary epics.
The legend says that the epic hero of the Ramayana stopped in the Bandhavgarh place when he was returning from Lanka after defeating the king Ravana, who was the vicious demon king that kidnapped Sita, the beloved wife of Rama.
In the ensuing war, the demon king Ravana was defeated and Rama brought back Sita from the imprisonment. On his way back he built the fort of Bandhavgarh and was therefore the most revered figure by the Jambuban and Hanuman to whom that region belonged.
There are numerous sandstones in Bandhavgarh, that relates the history of that region and it is worthless to visit the Bandhavgarh National Park without visiting the Fort.
There is a 35 feet high monolithic statue of Lord Vishnu inside the fort of Bandhavgarh; the figure is surrounded by the seven hooded snake, and is supposed to have been constructed on the 10th century.
There is also a pool of spring water in front of the Vishnu Shrine and this is named Charan Ganga or the water at the feet of the Almighty.
This is one of the three perennial streams that flow through the park all round the year, and is frequented by the tigers when they need water and so, this place deserves special attention.
For the hunters of the old times, this place used to be the main spot where they sat for long hours in want of tiger's arrival so that they may hunt these elegant animals and boast in front of their friends and family members.
The main gate of this Fort is named Karn Pol. Kabir, one of the Sufi Saints used to stay and preach his sermons here.
