In 1663 AD, the Dutch seized the fort from the Portuguese and sold it to King Arakkal Ali Raja. Later in 1790 AD, the British took over the reins of this fort and the fort became one of the chief military centers of the British in Malabar. It is also believed that there is a secret underground tunnel in the fort that passes through the sea and leads to the Thalessery Palace, positioned 21 km away.
The Arakkal family was the only Muslim royal family of Kerala that reigned over parts of the coast and even Lakshadweep. The Arakkal family did not discriminate between the male and female members of the family when it can to governing the land. The eldest member of the family was made the head and ruler. The male rulers were known as Ali Raja, while the female rulers were called Arakkal Beevis.
