The name of this state is believed to be derived from the word "Keralaputra" which means son of the Cheras, the rulers of Kerala in ancient times. Kerala is mentioned in the edicts of the Emperor Ashoka, (273-236) BC.
Renowned for its spice, sandalwood and ivory, Kerala was ruled by a succession of Chera rulers. Arab traders regularly came to Kerala to trade and it was an Arab guide who brought Vasco da Gama to the Malabar Coast in 1498 A.D. The Portuguese, Dutch and English East India companies vied with each other and the Arabs for control over the spice trade.
In the 19th century Kerala was ruled by a number of enlightened maharajahs of Travancore State, who promoted the growth of education, art and music in Kerala. Travancore State merged with the Indian republic after 1947
After Indian independence, Kerala has developed into one of India's most literate states and because of its tropical climate, natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, ayurvedic therapies and friendly people, has become a prime destination for tourists from all over the world.
