Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple:
Located 32 km south of Alappuzha, this temple is a must-see while on a tour to Harippad. This is an internationally famous ancient serpent shrine under the patronage of a Brahman family, headed by a priestess. Dedicated to the Serpent God Nagaraja, the temple has 30,000 images of snakes along the paths and is one of the largest temples in Kerala. Barren women are believed to be blessed with children here and a special turmeric paste available at the shrine is said to possess powers to cure even leprosy.
Subrahmanya Temple: Constructed in the ancient Kerala style of architecture, there is a legend attached to this temple that when the temple was nearing completion, one of the trustees had a dream about finding the idol of Subrahmanya. In accordance with his directions, the four-armed idol was found in the river near Pathiramanal Island and brought to Harippad. While returning, the people who found the idol halted at Champakulam to spend the night and performed a puja. On the following morning, colorful boats from all over the region assembled to escort the idol in a ceremonial procession through the lake to the Temple.
Payippad Boat Race: To commemorate the day of the installation of the deity of Subrahmanya at the Subrahmanya Temple, this snake boat race is organized every year at the Payippad Lake, during the Malayalam month Chingam, (August-September). This 3-day water festival is the most popular snake boat race in Kerala, and is the major tourist attraction for tourists on a tour to Harippad.
