    Introduction

Srirangapatna FortSrirangapatna is a small island town located 15 km northeast of Mysore in Karnataka. This history-rich town was the capital of the Mysore state under the warrior-king Tipu Sultan. As a result Srirangapatna flaunts a number of historical monuments related to the life and period of Tipu Sultan. But it is primarily the Srirangapatna Fort and the waters of the River Cauvery that draws people to Srirangapatnam – the legendary capital of the ‘Tiger of Mysore’.

Considered by many as the second strongest fort in India, Srirangapatna Fort is the main tourist attraction at Srirangapatnam. It is from here that Tipu charged at the British soldiers with his legendry sword. Unfortunately, it is within the fort of Srirangapatna that Tipu was killed finally – betrayed by one of his own confidants. An obelisk in the Fort marks the place where he fell. After gaining victory, the British went on to loot and plunder Srirangapatna and Tipu’s Palace.

The double-walled Srirangapatna Fort features four gates named as Bangalore, Mysore, Delhi and Water and Elephant gates. Within the fort premises, there are two dungeons where prisoners were held captive. These dungeons also attract visitor to Srirangapatna Fort. A simple structure within the Fort - with about 40 ft. high walls on three sides - is believed to be the "rocket court" or the launch pad from where Tipu’s soldiers used to launch their missiles. Srirangapatna Fort also housed Lalmahal - the Tipu's residence which had been completely demolished and the spot is today marked by just a mound, with a notice board atop.

On your trip to Srirangapatna Fort you can also visit some other tourist attractions of Srirangapatna like the Gumbaz – Tipu’s splendid tomb, renowned for its architecture and craftsmanship, lying outside the Fort; the Ranganathaswamy Temple - housing the deity of Lord Vishnu as ‘Ranganatha’ – is another major destination nearby. The Daria Daulat Palace or the Palace of Tipu Sultan in Srirangapatnam is also must-visit site, built of teakwood and adorned by colorful frescoes on the walls. The Masji-e-Ala or the Juma Majid at Srirangapatna is famous for the lofty minarets that rest of the monuments of the region.
