Introduction
Often referred as the ‘Agra of South India’, Bijapur in Karnataka is home to some of the finest specimens of the architectural splendor of the ancient past. The erstwhile capital of the Adil Shahi rulers, Bijapur has still today managed to preserve its dignity and royal grandeur through its numerous monuments dating back to the 15th-17th centuries. One such magnificent monument is the Ibrahim-Roza Bijapur – a beautiful tomb featuring elegant corridors and interconnected buildings furnished with richly decorated walls and perforated stone windows. Believed to have been built by Ibrahim Adil Shah II (1580-1626) for his queen Taj-Sultana, Ibrahim-Roza Bijapur flaunts an austere grace about it and provides a fascinating insight into the Muslim architecture of the era.
While the Gol Gumbaz – one of the most famous monuments of Bijapur - is admired more for its immensity, Ibrahim-Roza Bijapur is an exemplary instance of elegance and delicacy. The minarets of this mausoleum rise 24 m. above the ground and are said to have been an inspiration for building the minarets of the wondrous Taj Mahal. Ibrahim Roza is one of the few monuments in Bijapur where one gets to see extensive stone filigree and other sculpturally decorative works.
Ibrahim-Roza Bijapur is also famous as the venue where the king Ibrahim Adil Shah II, his queen, his daughter, two sons and his mother Haji Badi Sahiba were buried.
A destination well worth visit on any tour to Bijapur, Ibrahim Roza is revered as one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in the world.
