Introduction
The district headquarters of Gulbarga is located at a distance of 613 kms to the north of Bangalore in the northeastern part of Karnataka. Gulbarga flaunts a unique synthesis of Kannada, Marathi and Hyderabadi cultures and houses several tourist spots including some magnificent palaces, mosques, stately building and bazaars.
The majestic Gulbarga Fort – one of the most prominent monuments of Karnataka, was originally built by Raja Gulchand and later refurbished by Ala-ud-din Bahmani. The magnificent fort structure encompasses large buildings, mosque, temple, stables, ammunition dumps, carriages, 15 towers, 26 guns, and many beautiful courtyards. One of the most striking features of Gulbarga Fort is the imposing mosque within its ramparts,
which was built on the lines of the famous Mosque of Cordova in Spain. The only one of its kind in India, the mosque is sprawled over 38,000 sq. ft. and is furnished with elegant domes and arched columns. A group of royal tombs belonging to the Bahamani Sultans mark the area towards the southern entrance of the Gulbarga Fort. The Ranamandala - a gigantic 60 feet height structure, is also one of the attractions of Gulbarga and it has been partially restored to bring back some of its ancient charm.
The imposing fort of Gulbarga has stood tall for centuries, as a mute witness to many a battle and onslaught. Demolished almost to the grounds by Krishna Devaraya of Vijaynagar, it rose to glory again when Adil Shah undertook its repair.
