Introduction
The renowned Jain pilgrim center of Sravanabelagola is located at a distance of about 158 kms from Bangalore in Karnataka. Sravanabelagola, literally meaning 'the monk on the top of the hill' – had been home to several hermits, mystics and ascetics since at least the 3rd century BC. Famous for housing the colossal Gomateshwara Statue Sravanabelagola, this pilgrim destination is a great center for Jain culture and a major tourist attraction of Karnataka at the same time.
The monolithic statue of Jain saint Gomateshwara also referred as Lord Bahubali stands majestically atop a hill and has been carved out of a single block of granite. The magnificent Gomateshwara Statue Sravanabelagola has continued to attract thousands of pilgrims since time immemorial. Regarded as one of the largest monolithic statues in the world, the statue of Gomateshwara stands about 58 feet 8 inches high and was built around 983 AD by Chamundraya – a minister of the Ganga ruler, Rajamalla.
The hill of Sravanabelagola lies at an altitude of 3347 feet above sea level and a flight of 614 steps leads to the summit, whereupon stands tall the ‘Gomateshwara Statue Sravanabelagola’. The statue shows Gomateshwara - son of the first Tirthankara and a famous saint in his own right standing nude on a lotus, in accordance with the Jain custom. The corner of his lips bears a hint of a smile, as if he is watching the world with indifference. The swirling creepers around his arms and legs, and the anthills and snakes at the feet of Gomateshwara Statue Sravanabelagola, indicate the extent of the saint's reclusive life. The finely carved features of the statue proclaim outstanding craftsmanship and minute attention to details.
Thousands of devotees throng Sravanabelagola during the Mahamastakabhishekam festival held once in 12 years, wherein the Gomateshwara Statue Sravanabelagola is bathed in milk, curds, ghee, saffron and gold coins.
In addition to the Gomateshwara statue, Sravanabelagola is home to several Jain bastis (temples) and monasteries and ranks as a must-visit site on any tour to Karnataka.
