Introduction
Bidar is a tiny district, located 669 kms from Bangalore in Karnataka. Taking pride in its glorious history, Bidar entices tourists with the magnificent fort, the cannons, palaces, tombs and historical monuments. The erstwhile capital of the Bahamani kingdom and the Barid Shahi dynasty, Bidar is most famous for housing the imposing Bidar Fort, the main gateway of which is believed to have originally been built by Bahamani Sultan Ahmad Shah Wali in 1429 AD.
The Bidar Fort has five Darwazas (gates) leading onto a small town enclosed within the fortifications. The entrance named Gumbaz Darwaza leads to the Rangin Mahal – the ancient royal residence featuring intricately carved wooden pillars, Persian couplet engravings on encaustic tiles and some splendid inlay works.
The royal kitchens and royal baths are located in close proximity to the palace. Move further ahead to enter the Ladies’ Apartments fitted with a 16-columned prayer hall.
Another building worth visit at Bidar Fort is the Solah Kamba Masjid, the oldest Muslim building in Bidar and among the largest in India. Other places to visit include the Gagan Mahal, the Diwan-E-Am which once housed the fabulous turquoise throne, the Takhat Mahal, the Royal Pavilion, the Hazar Kothari and the Naubat Khana.
Your trip to Bidar Fort must also include visit to Bahmani Tombs at Ashtur – the beautiful tombs having interiors adorned with medieval paintings while the outer walls decorated with tile work.
Some other important destinations at Bidar Fort are the 71-foot tower - Chaubara, and the Madrasa of Mahamud Gawan which once used to attract scholars from all over the Muslim world. Also nearby is the Nanak Jhira – famous for housing a Guru Nanak Gurudwara, and the rock temple at Narasimha Zarni
