Float Festival of India in Madurai is celebrated at the Mariamman Teppakulam Tank, around the Mennakshi temple. The occasion is God Alangar(incarnation of Vishnu) giving his sister Meenakshi(incarnation of Parvati) in marriage to Sundaresha(incarnation of Lord Shiva).
Features:
Overly dressed and jeweled images of the goddess Meenakshi and goddess Sundaresha are carried in a procession from the Meenakshi temple to the tank and are floated on a raft that is decorated with flowers and lamps. Prayers are offered accompanied by music.
The tranquil waters of the tank become vibrant as soon as the Mandapam is illuminated
Devotees clad in yellow and dance and sprinkle colored water on the crowd
Tourists from all over the country take part in the festivities.
