Introduction
Drupka Teshi is an important festival of Sikkim that is held in the month of August. The Drupka Teshi festival celebrates the first teaching of Lord Buddha. Sikkim is the land of colorful festivals that depict the true spirit and warmth of the people of Sikkim. All the festivals are celebrated with a lot of fanfare and joy and reflect the true carefree fun loving nature of the Sikkimese people. The Drupka Teshi is one such festival.
Lord Buddha was born in Nepal in Lumbini as a prince and lived a royal lifestyle. But after a few years he realized that this materialistic life does not attract him at all and he shunned the royal lifestyle and went for the search of Enlightenment. At the age of 35, Buddha attained Enlightenment in Sarnath. Budhha finally attained Nirvana.
Buddha gave his first teaching to the disciples in Sarnath. He turned the Wheel of Dharma that is his sermon to the disciples. Budhha preached four Noble Truths to the disciples. The first is the Noble Truth of Suffering. Teshi is the fourth day of the Tibetan month Drupka. On this auspicious day the people of Sikkim celebrate the sermons of Lord Buddha.
Drupka Teshi Festival in Sikkim is celebrated by offering prayers in the Deer Park and also one secluded place in North Sikkim. The festival is also celebrated by a Yak race.
The Drupka Teshi (Aug) in Sikkim is an important festival and tourists from all over the world visit Sikkim to be a part of this holy festival.
