Pushkar is one of the religious towns in the state of Rajasthan which is considered to be one of the five dhams or pilgrimage places in India the other four being, Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram and Dwarka. A colorful fair is set up here in the month of Kartik on a full moon day, or November- December according to the English calendar.
According to an old legend, Brahma, one of the Gods in the Holy Trinity, killed the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower. The petals fell in three places and gave rise to beautiful lakes which in time acquired holy relevance. The Pushkar Lake is one such lake and is visited by hundreds of devotees every year who come and bathe in the holy waters.

A large number of stalls are set up at the fair which sells handicrafts, beaded jewellery, and embroidered fabrics. A book bazaar also sells second hand books in various languages.
Pushkar is also the venue for cattle fair. Camels are brought, sold and even raced for entertainment. Bullock cart races on the sand dunes are an added attraction.
The fair stalls are great place to enjoy the traditional delicacies.
Cultural programs performed by the local people are great crowd pullers. The evenings are charmful with the folk dances and songs. Puppet shows also firm part of the recreation.

The best time to visit Pushkar and enjoy the fair is during the winter months of November- December.

Located on the Broad Gauge line, the nearest station to Pushkar is Ajmer. Trains from major cities are available.
