The Gangaur Festival also known as the spring festival is held in the months of March- April in Rajasthan is dedicated to the Goddess Parvati. Known to be the most loyal wife of Lord Shiva this festival is solely held to pay respect to the Goddess who is the symbol of virtue, eternal love and fidelity.
Though the festival takes place in almost all the major cities of Rajasthan, like Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, the best place to visit and have a glimpse of this exotic festival is Udaipur. The whole city is decorated and women in their traditional attire look simply stunning.

This festival is basically women oriented as all the rituals are performed by the women folk.
Married women during this festival keeps fast and prepare mouth watering delicacies especially sweet dishes which are offered to the beloved Goddess.
Pujas are performed and the married women pray for the long life of their husbands. Unmarried young girls also looking gorgeous in their best clothes, pray to the benevolent Mother for husbands of their choices. The festivities usually begin a fortnight before the actual day of the festival.
During the festival and in an auspicious hour of the afternoon, the women take out a procession of the idols of Gauri Mata and Isar, balanced on their heads. The procession is accompanied by songs of departure of Gauri Mata to her husband's house.
The procession returns after two days. According to the rituals Gauri faces Isar in the same direction and the festival is concluded with the idols being immersed in the water of the tanks or a well. The end is marked by sorrow and tears in the eyes of the women.
