The venue for the Baneshwar fair is Dungarpur in Rajasthan. The name is derived from the Shiva Linga which is present in the local Mahadev temple in Dungarpur and means the master of the delta.
The present Baneshwar fair is the culmination of two fairs. One fair was held in the honor of Baneshwar Mahadev or lord Shiva and the other which was initiated after the construction of the Vishnu temple by Jankunwari, daughter-in-law of Mavji, who was a respected saint believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The grand and colorful fair is held at a small delta formed by the river Som and Mahi. The fair starts on the auspicious day of Magh Shukla Ekadashi during Shivaratri and culminates on Magh Shukla Purnima.
Features:
The fair is mainly a tribal one attracting the local tribes of Bhils in large numbers. They worship the deity by the name of Mavji and come from the districts of Udaipuir, Dungarpur and Banswara.
In the morning during the fair days, the temple doors open early in the morning when the deity is bathed with saffron and followed by an aarti. In the evening, ash is applied to the Shiva Linga, and devotees offer goodies like wheat, milk, fruits, sweets, coconut and cash.
There are folk dance and songs programs by the tribal people. Apart from them the prime attractions at the fair are magic shows, animal shows and acrobat feats.
