Snana Yatra in Orissa is celebrated in Jagannatha Temple in Puri. Popular as the Bathing Festival, Snana Yatra is observed on a full moon day in May or June.
Legends say that this fair and festival in Orissa is treated as the birthday of Lord Jagannatha and thus is also held in other temples of the state. It is also learnt that this bathing ceremony was originally a tribal ritual, which was later imbibed as a Hindu custom. Even now, the Daita and Savara tribes, perform the rituals of this festival from the most virgin parts of the forests.
Features:
Before Snana Yatra, the idols of Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra are taken to Snana-Vedi or the Bathing platform.
Then water is brought from the Suna Kua or the Golden well in 130 copper vessles and are purified with flowers, perfumes and other ingredients at Bhoga Mandap
On the morning of full moon, the vessels are carried from Bhoga Mandap to the Snana Vedi in a function called Jaladhibasa.
The idols are then decked and smeared with red powder.
As they are bathed, hymns are chanted.
The idols are then gorgeously dressed and are hidden away from the devotees for fifteen days
During this hibernation, when none of the rituals are performed, the idols are repainted and adorned.
