Chandan Yatra in Orissa is celebrated all across the state. Held in the month of Vaisaksha, Chandan Yatra marks the culmination of the series of religious festivals which is performed at the famous Lord Jagannatha Temple at Puri as well as in other shrines across the state.
One of the most popular fairs and festivals in Orissa, it begins on Akshyaya Trutiya and continues for the next 20 days in a grand manner in the month of Baisakh. The popular beliefs say that after the series of festivals, the deity goes on a cruise on the waters with the soothing effect of sandal or chandan before he retires to the indoors to rejuvenate himself before the next season of festivals.
While the festival is celebrated for 21 days in Puri, in other temples, it is celebrated only for the last three days.
