About Nagaland
Carved out of the Naga Hills - Tuesnsang Area, Nagaland is dominated by the Naga communities. This north-eastern state of India covers an area of 16,488 sq. km. and is home to a diversity of flora and fauna. The state is renowned for its quality handloom and handicrafts, including beautifully hand-woven tribal shawls of various tribes, Naga mekhelas (sarongs), Naga hand-bags, etc.
The Festival
Celebrated in the first week of May every year, from 1st to 3rd of May, by the Ao tribe of Nagaland, Moatsu Festival is marked by vivacious songs and dances. The festival, comprising of various rituals and lots of revelry, provides the Aos a period of recreation and amusement after their week-long work of clearing fields, burning jungles and sowing seeds, cleaning up the Tsubu (wells), and repairs and construction of houses by elders of the Putu Menden. Once the sowing is completed, they observe Moats Mong.
One of the symbolic celebrations during this festival is Sangpangtu, where a big fire is lit and men and women sit around it sporting their best apparel and the womenfolk serve wine and meat. A virtuous man who lives by the guidance of the Almighty forecast whether good or evil days are in store for the people and the village by readings of the celebration of the Moatsu festival.
The State Government of Nagaland has identified Chuchuyimlang village as the destination for Moatsu festival. The festival is now being celebrated as a national event since the year 2000 at Chuchuyimlang, where a traditional village has been set up by the village community for the tourists which is functional throughout the year.
