About Nagaland
Carved out of the Naga Hills - Tuesnsang Area, Nagaland is dominated by the Naga communities. This north-eastern state of India covers an area of 16,488 sq. km. and is home to a diversity of flora and fauna. The state is renowned for its quality handloom and handicrafts, including beautifully hand-woven tribal shawls of various tribes, Naga mekhelas (sarongs), Naga hand-bags, etc.
The Festival
Nagaland boasts 16 major tribes, all of which are unique in character. In the year 2000, Nagaland's government decided to engage them all in a common festival, so as to revive, protect and sustain the richness of the Naga culture and traditions. This led to the birth of the Hornbill Festival. Named after the hornbill, a bird adored world-over and integral to the folklore of most of the state's tribes, this festival is celebrated through a grand cultural extravaganza at Kohima between 1st & 5th of December every year.
Hornbill Festival unites the entire state in a colossal vibrant jubilation of dances, performances, crafts, parades, games, sports, food fairs and religious ceremonies. The Naga troupes sing folk songs, perform traditional dances and play local games and sports. It also features traditional arts, with paintings, wood carvings and sculptures by modern Naga artists. The evening is marked by a program of music concert, as the festive spirit continues throughout the night.
