The three Kuts in Mizoram are Mim Kut, Chapchar Kut and Pawl Kut, all connected by agricultural activities and rejoiced with feasts and dances. Farmers cut bamboo forests to make place for jhum (seasonal farming), and Mim Kut is a festival held in the months of August-September before the hard work in the jhum gets over. Also known as the Maize Festival, Mim Kut is celebrated after completion of the maize harvest, marked by revelry including drinking rice-beer, singing, dancing and feasting.
Spanning 1-2 days, this festival is observed in memory of those in the community who had died in the preceding year. Samples of the previous year's harvest are sanctified to the departed souls. Fresh vegetables, necklaces and cloth are also offered on the memorials of the dead. There is a popular belief that the spirits of the dead would revisit their house during the Mim Kut. Zu - a drink - would be taken in houses in which someone had died during the year. On the second day everyone consumes a meal of bread.
