Lai-Haroba Festival in Manipur is celebrated in the month of May to revere deities such as Umang Thai. The festival characterizes the worship of traditional deities and ancestors. To the Manipuris, the world came into being with dance. Legend has it that, in the beginning, Guru Sidaba was the greatest Lord who lived in a dark vacuum. Once the dark room was illuminated with the myriad hues of the rainbow, the Guru was motivated to create the world. He sent Atiya Guru Sidaba along with a creature to accomplish his mission. This creature maneuvered a wiry network in which human life was to be integrated. Atiya Guru decided to harden the framework. He approached Guru Sidaba again. The Guru provided him some dirt from his navel and produced nine men fro the right side and seven women from the left side to serve Atiya Guru. The dirt was to be added to the web to solidify it. Atiya Guru along with men and women sat down to work towards the mission. The first two attempts were frustrated by Harba. Guru Sidaba sent the goddess of lightening to the rescue of Atiya Guru. Harba was enslaved by the beauty of the goddess. The framework was then solidified and made suitable for human life. Lai Haroba was celebrated on the conclusion of the whole process.
