The auspicious day of Janmasthami is celebrated every year to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna. It is celebrated every year on the 8th day of the dark fortnight also known as the Krishna Paksh. Lord Krishna is the eighth most important incarnation of lord Vishnu. The grand event is celebrated in the Hindu month of Bhadon which is July-August according to the English calendar. The period generally coincides with the rainy season.

Devotees keep long fast till midnight. Special dishes are prepared to treat the Lord with love and then are taken by the devotees.
Alms are distributed and every needy is given food at the temples. A strict vegetarian diet is followed.
An event named breaking of Dahi Handi is special to the occasion. A group of people named Govindas (another name of the Lord) try to break a pot hung high up and filled with milk, bananas, yoghurt and money. The event is the replica of the yoghurt breaking feats of Lord Krishna in his childhood.
When to Visit
Since the grand event takes place in the rainy season, the month of July-august are considered best time to visit.
