Mahavir Jayanti in Delhi commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism through prayers and processions stressing on non-violence. Lord Mahavira founded Jainism around 5th-6th century B.C. Mahavira's thoughts and philosophies disseminated around the same time as that of Buddha. Though both questioned the rigidity of caste structures, they moved in different lines. While Buddha spoke of a balance between lavishness and austerity, Mahavira put strict emphasis on asceticism. The cornerstone of the Jain religion is that ''there is neither personal god nor even a single impersonal absolute''. The stress is on attainment of self perfection by following the tri-ratna (three jewels) of Jainism - right faith, right knowledge and right conduct.
