Guru Purab in Delhi commemorates the birth of Guru Nanak, the first of the ten Sikh gurus. Guru Nanak was the founder of the Sikh religion. The followers of the religion believe that it was Nanak who enlightened the world with his thoughts and teachings. So the festival is also called 'Prakash Utsav' or the festival of light.
Features:
Three weeks before the Guru Purab, processions are carried through the streets. The devout offer sweets and tea to the Sikhs in the procession.

The sacred text of the Sikhs- the Guru Granth Sahib is recited in the gurudwaras in continuum for three days before the Guru Purab- this is called the Akhand path. The reading closes on the sacred day.
On the holy day, the Granth sahib is adorned in flowers and taken out in a procession accompanied by Nagar Kirtans
Special lunches are served at the Gurudwaras. The food is served with Seva(service) and spirit(devotion).
