Rongali Bihu or Bohaag Rongali is one of the three Bihu festivals, which is celebrated in April or Bohag, first month of the Assamese calendar, to mark the beginning of seeding time. This festival of merriment derives its name from the Sanskrit word, Vishuvam when day and night become equal as the sun causes vernal equinox.
Features of Rongali Bihu in Assam
- Rongali Bihu begins on Vishuva Sankrant day called Garu Bihu. Cattle are given ceremonial bath, garlanded and decked colorfully.
- Manuh Bihu continues as youth decked in grand dresses perform bihu dances and song called bihugeets at the tap of rhythmic beats
- Folk dance-Husari or carol singing and group dances are performed.
- Women wear traditional clothes-mekhala , a shawl of golden silk fibres, and a red blouse. Gamochas or self woven napkins are gifted to men and various cultural programs are organized to entertain people.
- Bihu Dances are performed with Dionysian spirit and sexually implicit movements to symbolize fertility of Mother Earth, ensuring bounty in the next year's harvest.
- Traditional festive food of Rongali Bihu is the special cake, pitha, which is prepared in every house so that friends and relatives can be offered.
