Baishagu in Assam is one of the famous festivals celebrated by the tribals in mid April or Baishak- the first month of the regional calendar. Like most other fairs and festivals in Assam, Baishagu too brings in men and women in equal importance. Especially the Bodo Kacharis of Assam in India celebrate this festival to mark the beginning of New Year. As this festival coincides with the colorful season of spring, the mood of revelry merriment and youth oozes out from the various customs incorporated into the festival. The aboriginal sprit is exuded by the use of rythms, drums and dances in the festival.
Features of Baishagu in Assam
- On the first day of Baishagu in Assam, cows are worshipped.
- Bohag, the first day of the first month of the Assamese calendar coincides with the second day of the festival on which all the youth ask for blessings from their guardians and other elderly people at their homes.
- Thereafter, they worship Bathou or a form of Lord Shiva with offers of chicken and rice beer.
- The most colorful and exciting part of the festival is performed then in the evening when dances are organized to the beats of traditional music. Khum (drum), Jotha (Manjari), Khawbang (Taal), Gogona (Mouth-organ) and Siphung (Flute)-all these instruments are used during the frenzied dance performed by youths both men and women
- The festival culminates with the prayers which are offered by the whole group in Garjasali.
