This day marks the journey of the sun towards the north and hints at the setting of the summer. Legend says that Bheeshma in the epic Mahabharata decided to die on this day and attained salvation to heaven.

Makara Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh is celebrated for three days.
On the day before Makara Sankranthi, called Bhogi, households are cleaned and discarded items are burnt. A tiny hand-held drum is beaten and then also burnt. The drum is beaten with dambar , a twig made into a stick.
Patterns with mortal powder are drawn on the ground and lump of cowdung and are placed on the drawings in front of the houses.
Ashes of the bhogi fire are rubbed on the foreheads of people
A special delicacy called Pongal is cooked which contains husked greengram, rice with salt and pepper powder
On the day of Sankranti, new clothes are worn and worships are conducted at temples after which sesame seeds, sugar and sugarcane pieces distributed among friends and relatives.
On the third day called Kanuma, a huge number of films are released.
Cattle are decked, rice and milk are offered in the cattle-shed and remnant of the food is scattered on the field to shoe away evil spirits from the crops.
Though illegal, cockfights are organized in many parts of the state
