Maha Shivratri is an occasion on which devotees of Lord Shiva offer prayers to Lord Shiva and stay awake throughout the night. This occasion is specially celebrated in various parts of the country including in Kalahasti in Andhra Pradesh.
Maha Shivratri in Kalahasti is celebrated on the I3th or I4th day of Phalgun, which coincides with February or March every year. One of the famous fairs and festivals in Andhra Pradesh, Maha Shivratri meaning the night of Shiva, also marks the day on which Lord Shiva married to Parvati and revealed his form of 'Destroyer' while dancing 'Tandav'- the dance of destruction. This festival is grandly and elaborately celebrated in the Kalahasteshwara Temple at Kalahasti, which is close to the pilgrim center of Tirupati.
According to legends, this temple also referred to in pre-Christian Tamil literature, was founded by the Cholas in 10th century.

During Maha Shivratri, devotes fast for the entire day, stay awake throughout the night and worship the Shiva Lingam every three hours with milk, curd, honey and rose water.
