Andhra Pradesh is dotted with numerous tourist attractions. Among them, the famous caves of Andhra Pradesh are a major crowd-puller. These prehistoric caves of Andhra Pradesh not only make for a wonderful sight, but also bear a historical significance and religious value. This includes the legendary Belum Caves in Belum
The longest underground cave system in South India, Belum Caves in Belum is named after the old Sanskrit word for cave, Bilum. It is the second largest natural caves in the Indian subcontinent after Meghalaya Caves. Offering a stunning view, Belum caves in Belum is located at Kolimigundla Mandal of Kurnool district, about 320 km from Hyderabad.
Remnants of vessels found in the Belum Caves have been scientifically dated to 4500 BC, suggesting that the caves are probably thousands of years old. Initially discovered in the year 1884 AD by Mr. Robert Bruce Foote, the Belum Caves was explored by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, followed by a team of European speleologists led by Mr. H. Daniel Gebaner in 1982 and 1983. These underground caves are located on a flat agricultural field, have three well like cavities with the central one being the main entrance to the caves.
The cave is horizontal after a descent of 20 meters at the entrance, and has a length of 3229 meters, of which about 2000 meters has been made accessible for public viewing since February 2002. Throughout the caves, there are some amazing stalactite and stalagmite formations. In July 2002, the Saptasvarala Guha or Musical chamber was discovered, where you can listen to the metallic sounds of the stalactites. There are also fresh water galleries and siphons in the caves. Cumulatively, it all makes Belum Caves in Belum a popular geological and archeological attraction.
In the year 1999, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) gave a facelift to the caves. APTDC have installed soft illumination and provided pathways throughout the caves, enhancing its magnificence. Underground water springs and streams have been developed. Besides fresh-air-shafts, canteen, washroom and toilet facilities have also been created near the entry point for the convenience of the tourists. APTDC offers one day trips by coach to the nearby Ahobilam, Alampur, Mahanandi, Srisailam, Mantralayam and other places.
