The history of Andhra Pradesh dates back to around 300 BC. In those days, Andhra Pradesh was a prime Buddhist center and part of the vast kingdom of Ashoka the Great Mauryan king. It is believed that the people of Andhra Pradesh belong to the Aryan race, who migrated to the south of the Vindhyas and mingled with the non-Aryans.
The earliest dynasty that ruled Andhra Pradesh was the Satavahana dynasty, also known as the Andhras. The Satavahanas established their kingdom in 236 BC around the modern Hyderabad. The Satavahana kings were followers of Buddhism, and during this period Buddhism spread to China, the far-east and to Sri Lanka from here, thus enriching the history of Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra Pradesh history is dotted with the rule of various dynasties. The Satavahanas were succeeded by the Ikshvakus, who ruled for 57 years. Later, the Pallavas from Tamil Nadu captured the area that lies south of River Krishna and ruled till the end of the 6th century. This was followed by the rule of the Chalukya and the Kakatiya dynasties. The Kakatiyas ruled this state in the 13th century and established their capital at Warangal.
In 1323 AD, the rule of the Kakatiyas ended and led to the beginning of a Muslim regime for the first time in the region, as the Tughlak Sultan of Delhi took over the reigns of Andhra Pradesh. This was a major event in Andhra Pradesh history, as the Telugus were brought under a totally different set of customs, language and religion.
Four local kingdoms arose out of the old Kakatiyan Empire, including Vijayanagar, a strong empire which rose against the Muslim dominance of 200 years. Finally a strong coalition of the sultanates of Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, Golconda and Bihar defeated the Vijayanagar army in 1565 AD.
Subsequently, the Qutub Shahi dynasty emerged when Sultan Quli, the Bahmani governor of Telangana, became independent and expanded Golconda up to Machlipatnam on the east coast. They were defeated by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb, in 1687 AD, who seized Golconda.
Aurangazeb handed the responsibility of ruling the state to his governors - the Nizams. In 1800 AD, the British and French took over from the Nizams. Andhra became a part of Indian Union in 1947, when India became independent. A glorious day in the history of Andhra Pradesh was 1st October 1953, when the present state was formed.
