Agra is a city with a rich and varied history. Many rulers and dynasties have fought over this area and built their citadels here. Their monuments still remain and are open to visitors, providing a memorable tour of historic Agra.
Sikandar Lodi of the Lodi dynasty- rulers of the Sultanate at Delhi - founded the city of Agra, in the 16th century. The Lodi's were defeated by Babur who took control of Delhi and went on to establish the Mughal Empire and founded the Mughal dynasty.
During his time in Agra, he
introduced the concept of square Persian-styled gardens from his central Asian homeland.
The Mughals built many grand buildings in Agra. Among them are Agra Fort, built by Akbar, the Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah built by Noor Jahan, and the incomparable Taj Mahal, constructed by Shah Jahan. Many other palaces and garden were built by the Mughals in this imperial city. After the decline of Mughal rule, post-Aurangzeb, Agra was ruled by Jats, Marathas and the British.
After India gained independence, Agra has become one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and is an important North Indian city.
